Building the #702 Rabbit GTI

My orignal 1984 Rabbit L was a bit of a sleeper. It had the 10:1 1.9 liter engine running CIS injection with polished/ported head, match ported intake, G-grind cam, Hor Technologies Sport springs, Bilstein Sport struts/shocks, 2" Techtonics exhaust system, and.... well, a very ugly and rusty body.

I was able to locate a 1983 Rabbit GTI in Massachusetts that had a nice set of BBS 14" x 6.5" rims, window nets, full bolt in cage, and no engine. Perfect. I sold the bolt in cage for almost the full cost of the car. A good deal for both buyer and seller of the cage. The owner of the 1983 Rabbit had an event at NHIS so he brought it there with him where we towed it home from there.
The first thing that was needed was to install a NEHA legal 8-point welded custom cage. I brought my old white rusty Rabbit down to Chris Havas (www.Metalmarks.com) so we could remove the old roll bar. This took some time to plasma cut out the old roll bar so that it would be used as a base in the new Rabbit to complete the full cage. While it sat at his house waiting for its turn for the cage construction, I would often venture down to do some sanding... the red & blue painted needed to go!
After the 8-point cage was installed we brought the car over to my parents' house for painting. Since the new Rabbit would replace my white Rabbit as a daily driver we needed the interior, glass, lights, directionals, etc. to complete the car. During this process I was still driving the white Rabbit... less dash board (we had the speedo cluster taped to the steering column), holes in the floor where we removed the cage and.... well, I could see the engine while I was driving down the road!
As the new Rabbit body was getting close to completion, it was time to strip the white Rabbit to transfer all the parts.
This was all that was left of the old white Rabbit (pictured right). We loaded it with all the extra parts, metal scrap, etc. and Rathe's came by to pick it up. Straight to the crusher!
